The album was recorded at J.L’s home studio in Marrickville between September 2017 and the end of 2018. Self-recorded and played by J.L with added instrumentation by Travis Baird (Peter Fonda, AFX jim, Founder), John Encarnacao (Warmer, the Nature Strip), Luke Ó’Farrel (Laurels), Ryan Adamson (Hotel, Exposure), David Cotsios (Peter Fonda, The Woods Themselves). Most of the songs were written during the period of recording whilst a handful were reworkings of pre-existing songs, some of which date back to the tail end of machinemachine, a band led by JL that came to it’s end in 2015. J.L has since been committed to writing, recording and performing with Peter Fonda, resulting in their 2018 self-titled release, whilst working on this his first Joseph Leonard release since 2006, and the first entirely self-recorded release since his first album, Soft on the Small Moon, from 2004. The album is a slight departure from the tender and stark landscape of his earlier releases, or the raw energy of Machinemachine. Grievous Radio employs a wealth of treated keyboards and vocals, baritone guitars, and a prevailing sense of dark humour.
